Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to be marrying Hermia. When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods outside the city, and walk into the midst of a dispute between the king and queen of the fairies. But they are not alone. So, too, does a group of amateur actors rehearsing a play. Between the angry fairies, the bumbling players and the dazed lovers, flies Puck armed with a love juice capable of making anyone fall for the first person they set eyes upon – no matter how unsuitable.
Performed on an Elizabethan-inspired stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathe new life into this amazingly inventive play. Dreamlike, funny and beautiful, eight talented actors reinvent Renaissance touring theatre for the 21st century with Shakespeare’s greatest comedy.

My friend, her 11 year old
My friend, her 11 year old daughter and I watched A Midsummer Nights Dream at St Augustine's Abbey this afternoon and all three of us found the performance absolutely amazing... How eight people can play so many different characters is unbelievable; it just goes to show how professional the whole play is. The production team behind the play should be applauded!
The interaction with the audience was brilliant - at one point we even had Thesus sitting on our rug and drinking our wine!
It was a priviledge to watch such a great performance in such a beautiful setting - I would recommend it to anyone!
We saw the performance last
We saw the performance last night at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall and were blown away by the performances of all the actors - fantastic and entertaining, with minimal props, constanly, we saw comedy turned into passion, move into farce so professionally and in a blink, and with its contemporary twist, was an absolute joy. People next to us had never seen a theatre performance, and they too seemed entranced throughout.
A truly memorable experience for our party of 4 and even the Dolphins in the bay behind the stage came to entertain in the interval. A magical night down to the wonderful performances and execution of this play. Thank you all.
A party of 20 friends
A party of 20 friends celebrated a 60th birthday by watching this production at Hestercombe Gardens near Taunton , Somerset on Saturday 18th July 09. As we sat in pouring rain for the 1st half an hour we wondered what we were doing but all agreed we would not have missed a moment for anything. Superb performances by very talented acting team who surely must have a real future i nfront of them. And a great and very interesting production, especially such a sexy Puck! Many thanks for a wonderful afternoon- we did not even notice how damp we all were until later. .....
We saw the first performance
We saw the first performance at Portsmouth Museum Gardens on Friday, with a group of over 40 GCSE and A level students and had a brilliant time. It was a fantastic 'first' for many of them who had never experienced open air or Shakespeare previously.
It was lovely to look at - the choice of a 1930s style worked really well and was effectively integrated throughout and the energy and enjoyment of the performers really carried the audience along.
The approach to covering the vast range of characters with such a small cast was brilliantly handled - very clever - therefore the range of characterisation on show was enlightening for our students who could clearly see the distinction between the different groups.
Use of music, sound and effects were lovely as was the interaction with the audience.
A real feeling of fun was present throughout and we did notice a sense of freedom/ playfulness in the interpretation - it almost felt like they had been 'let out of school' and were seeing how far they could push things!
The very few little hiccups are sure to be ironed out as the production gets 'run- in' and I would personally recommend purchasing tickets as soon as possible!
