Letters Home: Salisbury

My good sweet mouse, I commend me heartily to you ...

We were extremely lucky with the performance space in Salisbury. Playing in the grounds of the magnificent Trafalgar Park – a house once owned by Admiral Nelson’s brother – we set our stage in front of it with acres of grass and fields in front of us. We have been bizarrely lucky with the weather up until this point. We are approaching 12 shows and we have yet to be rained on! Long may it continue!

Doing Shakespeare in the open air has been a real challenge. Being outside means that your voice can disappear if you're not careful! So really making everything clear without shouting your way through a performance is great challenge. Luckily, not only did the house provide a beautiful backdrop to our stage but it bounced our voices further out in to the garden, which was great.

The actual traveling is one of my favorite aspects of the tour so far. I came over from Ireland to go to drama school and because I’ve so busy with that for the past 3 years, that I haven't even remotely explored Britain. With the tour I get to see all of these wonderful places and get to know the country a bit better!

My characters have changed quite a bit since we opened in Brighton. As I play both of the twins, I’ve really been focusing on the differences between the two, and playing with how much I can separate them out … which I guess is different to if two actors were playing the parts; they’d be looking how to make them as similar as possible. It’s nice to think about the differences doubling up bring out.

The Salisbury audience were super. We had just finished playing at Shakespeare’s Globe, playing to 1500 people and were a bit nervous about playing to a much smaller crowd of 200 -300, but they really seemed to enjoy it and were happy to be included just as much as the Globe crowd. And being part of the Salisbury Arts Festival was great; there was a real buzz around the town and some brilliant things to do.
